The Vlora landfill caught fire again on Thursday, for the umpteenth time now. Images posted on social media show plumes of black smoke engulfing the city at the height of the tourist season.
Burning garbage has become a tradition in the city of Vlora. Last year, the city was engulfed for more than two weeks by toxic smoke released from a fire in the garbage field. Meanwhile, the most recent case was at the beginning of June, when the garbage field caught fire again, poisoning the entire city.
These repeated episodes of waste burning in Vlora raise suspicions of deliberate arson. Some even directly accuse the authorities, who through this means seek to cover up the failure in waste management, despite having spent millions.
But so far there is no official author.
A few weeks ago, Edi Rama, upset about the stagnation of work and the lame administration of the city of Vlora, dismissed all the directors of the city municipality. But apparently the new directors, selected by the Çuçi team, also started their work successfully.
