The Albanian government has decided to restore the sterilization service of surgical instruments to the state after the end of the corrupt sterilization concession. In the last meeting, the Council of Ministers approved a special decision to create the joint-stock company Operator of Integrated Sterilization Services.
According to the decision, the object of the state-owned company will be to provide sterilization services.
"The initial capital for the creation of the joint-stock company OSHIS sh.a. is 200 million lek," the government decision states. The new state-owned company will take ownership of all investments left by the concessionaire Saniservice.

"The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare transfers to the joint-stock company, free of charge, the assets and rights that pass to the state upon termination of the concession contract, in accordance with its provisions and those of the legislation in force," the decision states.
The sterilization concession was awarded in 2016. It is the most expensive of the four concessions in the health sector. According to data from the Ministry of Finance, from 2016 to 2025 the total cost of sterilization has reached around 160 million euros.
But in addition, this concession has now been officially branded as a corrupt affair, which led to the arrest of former Deputy Minister of Health Klodian Rrjepaj and businessman Ilir Rrapaj.
