The amount of deposits guaranteed by the state will increase significantly. The Deposit Insurance Agency has prepared a draft law, which will gradually increase the amount of deposits guaranteed by the state.
Currently, the Albanian government guarantees citizens' bank deposits up to 2.5 million lek or the equivalent in foreign currency. But this amount will gradually increase, initially to 6 million lek and then up to 100 thousand euros, which is the European Union limit.
"Regarding the increase in the coverage level, the draft law provides for a gradual and structured approximation towards the harmonized coverage level of 100,000 euros required by Directive 2014/49/EU," states the 2025 report, which the Deposit Insurance Agency has sent to Parliament.
According to the Agency, these changes represent the largest historical increase in the coverage level for bank deposits in Albania.
"To achieve this goal, the relevant provisions of the draft law provide that the increase in the coverage level will be done gradually for the member banks of the scheme, namely by increasing the coverage level from the current limit of 2,500,000 lek to 6,000,000 lek. At the moment of the accession of the Republic of Albania to the European Union, it is intended that the coverage level will reach the equivalent in lek of the amount of 100,000 euros, which is also the limit in the European Union," the report states.
The draft law that gradually increases the coverage of insured deposits was submitted to the Bank of Albania in December last year and, after receiving approval from the Central Bank, is expected to enter the parliamentary approval procedure.
According to official data, at the end of last year the total amount of deposits in the banking system reached 1,836 billion lekë with an annual increase of 9.1%. The Agency's obligation for compensation at the end of this year was 989 billion lekë, for 2,078,156 bank depositors.
