Three major fires within two months (June-July), at the waste landfill in the 24 Maji Neighborhood in Vlora, were the latest warning that if timely intervention was not made, the surrounding area, but also the entire city, would continue to be at risk from pollution at a very high level. Despite the treatment of urban waste at the Sherishta Landfill, since April 26 of this year, Vlora still has the previous waste landfill in the 24 Maji neighborhood unresolved.
The Promise
For the acting mayor (who resigned two days ago) Ermal Dredha, the "good news" was that this issue would soon be put to an end once and for all, by encapsulating the existing waste and turning the area into an eco-park.
"The old waste disposal area will soon begin the encapsulation part, as foreseen in the contract with KfW, which means that they have started the procedure and once the procedure is completed, I hope that in 3-4 months the implementation of the project to encapsulate and turn it into an eco-park will begin," said Dredha on June 13 of this year.
Faktoje.al was in Vlora in mid-August and found that the "mountain of waste" at the landfill had subsided somewhat, as a municipal excavation team was working to level it, but there was no sign of encapsulation.
The project is still an idea
Despite the optimism of the deposed mayor Dredha that within three or four months the project, tendering and financing would be completed and work on implementation would begin, the problem is unresolved, which has been officially confirmed by the Municipality of Vlora.
"There is still no final project for the encapsulation of waste at the previous landfill site. After the completion of the project, the works for its implementation will be tendered by the German Development Bank KfW and only after the completion of these procedures will we have the value of the contract for these works, which will finally solve the problem of the old urban waste collection site", the Municipality of Vlora told Faktoje.al. According to them, "... the relevant project for the encapsulation of the landfill is being prepared by foreign consultants, as part of the Solid Waste Management Program - Vlora Region, financed by the German Government through the German Development Bank KfW".
conclusion
We will consider the promise of the resigned mayor Ermal Dredha to begin implementing the project within 3-4 months for the encapsulation of urban waste in the landfill near the 24 Maji neighborhood in Vlora as unfulfilled so far.
