'Fiscal Peace', the strong card of the Socialists' electoral campaign in the economic aspect, is expected to begin implementation from January next year, according to the Rama 4 government program.
This initiative, which will last for 3 years, is expected to benefit at least 213 thousand taxpayers with unpaid tax liabilities.
'Peace' foresees the cancellation of liabilities older than 10 years, practically liabilities created until 2016. There are 355 million euros of liabilities older than 10 years, which will practically be erased through this fiscal peace, freeing businesses from debtor status.
The second largest beneficiaries will be those with debts up to 5 years old. For these entities, the cancellation of fines and interest is foreseen, but the obligation will be paid.
By the end of June, the debt with this maturity was 62.9 billion lek or almost 630 million euros, including arrears interest.
The third category is for entities with debts of 5-10 years. Those who pay their tax liability (i.e. unpaid tax) in 1 installment receive a 50% discount on fines and interest, while those who pay in several installments receive a 25% discount.
Debts with this maturity amount to 72.7 billion lek or 727 million euros.
But how much is the total tax debt?
According to data, as of June this year, the total unpaid liabilities is 175.5 billion lek or 1.7 billion euros, an increase compared to the previous year when the liabilities were 1.6 billion euros.
Of these 107.7 billion lek, about 1 billion euros are liabilities, 59.7 billion or 597 million euros are fines and 8.1 billion lek or 81 million euros are interest.
The largest amount of unpaid liabilities belongs to VAT, followed by profit tax, and then come other liabilities such as TAP, DIVA, or insurance.
Questions arise about whether social security contributions unpaid by businesses will be affected by this peace. The relief of the subject would penalize citizens, reducing their working years.
