The two Tigres anchored in Vlora will be converted to produce gas-fired power. The government has found a solution to escape one of the most controversial public contracts, that of the lease of two energy production ships, which were brought to Albania from Bangladesh.
In the government program for the period 2025-2029, the government emphasizes that the conversion of floating TECs anchored in Triport from oil to gas will reduce their production cost, making them more profitable. The aim is for the ships to be supplied with gas via the TAP gas pipeline.
The two floating power plants were contracted by the Albanian government in September 2022. According to the contract signed between KESH and the American company Excelerate, the Corporation was paid 94.5 thousand euros per day in rent and maintenance costs, while also providing the fuel for its own energy production.
The cost of producing energy from the two ships is several times higher than its purchase price on the stock exchange, which has made this one of the most controversial procurements in the public.
For almost two years the ships remained anchored without producing any energy. They started producing partially at the beginning of last year, while during this year they are thought to have produced more, over 80 thousand megawatts of energy. Meanwhile, it remains unclear how much money KESH has paid in total so far for the two ships.
The conversion to gas seems like another forced solution, as the Albanian government is forced to find a solution for the two Vlora ships. In the 2022 lease contract, it was foreseen from the beginning that after the payment of the two years of lease, the two ships would remain the property of the Albanian Power Corporation.
