The Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, stated that a by-law related to betting was approved at today's government meeting.
"The Ministry of Finance is working on bylaws for betting. There is also an act that was approved today at the government meeting and very soon all the necessary acts will be issued in order to enable online betting."
"Work is required, international expertise has been obtained so that it is according to international standards," said Malaj.
Online betting, an activity that continues massively in Albania illegally, is causing serious consequences for citizens and the budget.
Nearly 1,400 people have been prosecuted by the police in the last two years, while more than half of them have ended up in prison since February 2024, when the law was passed in Parliament.
The cause of this wave of arrests is the lack of law, which does not approve bylaws, thus violating the legal deadlines set by Parliament for their issuance.
