The government will change the Highway Code for skateboards. Sources at the Ministry of Interior told Report TV that authorities are looking at several European models, which limit the speed of skateboards, the places where they can move, and the age of their drivers.
First, the maximum speed that the skateboards will have. Sources say that the discussion is 25 km/h. Next, the minimum age of use, which is also under discussion here, is 16 years and older.
An important point is also considered the designated places where they should move on the road. The category of skateboards are vehicles that currently, according to the Road Code, can move in bicycle lanes and in their absence on the right side of the road. The new changes are expected to determine the types of roads where passage is allowed or not.
Skateboards are expected to be categorically prohibited from circulating outside of residential areas, such as highways or expressways, as their drivers have often been seen. The ban is also expected to be on sidewalks or pedestrian areas. Failure to comply is expected to be accompanied by fines, up to and including seizure of the vehicle.
Another moment is the decision whether or not to register these vehicles, for possible registration or a unique number to identify them, while the possibility of mandatory insurance is also being discussed, to hold them accountable just like other vehicles on the road. The drafting of these amendments to the Road Code is in its initial phase and there is still no set deadline for when they are expected to enter into force. Initially, important consultation phases must be passed, and then they must also receive approval in the Assembly.
Authorities are looking at some of the European models. The Netherlands is one of the countries that just a few months ago standardized the use of skateboards. This country has defined the types that are allowed for circulation, their registration, mandatory insurance, a minimum age of 16 years, circulation only on bicycle paths when they exist, a maximum speed of 25 km/h, as well as their fines according to the violation of these rules.
