The Competition Authority stated that, from yesterday until January 15, it has launched a special monitoring process in the basket goods market, with a particular focus on the end-of-year holiday period.
"The purpose of this monitoring is to verify the performance of prices and the behavior of enterprises along the supply and trading chain, with the aim of preventing any unjustified price increases as a result of coordinated commercial behavior or prohibited agreements between distributors, wholesalers and supermarket chains," the Authority said in an official announcement.
According to the announcement, the monitoring includes basic consumer goods, specifically: pasta, rice, flour, eggs, sugar, cooking oil and non-alcoholic beverages.
"The Competition Authority emphasizes that any agreement or concerted practice that has as its object or consequence the distortion of competition, especially through price increases to the detriment of consumers, constitutes a violation of the Law "On the Protection of Competition" and will be treated with maximum seriousness. In this context, the Competition Authority calls on all enterprises operating in the relevant markets to respect the rules of fair competition and to avoid any behavior that may undermine the normal functioning of the market," the announcement states.
Competition announced that it will continue to closely monitor market developments and will inform the public of any findings or measures that will be taken at the end of this monitoring.
