Ryanair and Wizz clash hard on the Tirana-Milan corridor

Ryanair has announced the launch of a new Tirana-Malpensa route, marking a further expansion into the Albanian market. The service, which begins operations on 29 March 2026, will operate up to ten times a week using Boeing 737-800 and 737-8 aircraft.

Ryanair said this is not a market test, but a high-frequency entry into a rapidly growing market.

"The Milan-Tirana corridor is already one of the busiest in Southern Europe. It combines strong diaspora travel with growing tourism demand. Ryanair is targeting both segments. By operating from Milan Malpensa, the airline is also changing its strategy. It is moving beyond its traditional reliance on secondary airports. It is entering the main hubs to capture higher value traffic," the Ireland-based low-cost carrier said.

According to Ryanair, Tirana is emerging as a major low-cost aviation hub. Airlines are investing heavily, while passenger numbers are growing rapidly. Ryanair is positioning itself at the center of this growth.

"Tirana is central to Ryanair's growth plans. The airline is building a base in the city. This transforms Tirana into a low-cost hub," Ryanair said.

According to the company, its investments in Tirana airport signal a long-term commitment and strategic expansion.

"Tirana is becoming a key hub in the airline's network," Ryanair added.

The Tirana-Milan route is one of the busiest corridors in Southeastern Europe. Competition is fierce in this segment. Another low-cost carrier, Wizz Air, is a major player, operating numerous flights on this route, while other carriers are adding indirect options.

"Ryanair's strategy is aggressive. It uses prices to stimulate demand. It offers high frequency. It builds market presence quickly. Passengers benefit from this competition. Ticket prices are reduced and opportunities are increased," Ryanair concluded.
