A landslide was recorded on Wednesday at noon at the beginning of the new Qukës-Qafë Plloçë road axis, on one of its slopes.
Although fortunately there was no damage, the event has increased concerns about the safety and sustainability of this road, which was inaugurated after 14 years of work and at a staggering cost of 260 million euros.
The contractor company intervened to clear the road and works to stabilize the terrain continued on Thursday. But the recurrence of landslides in a segment that was supposed to be new and safe indicates serious problems in design, supervision and construction quality.
Just a few weeks ago, a rockslide on the same axis blocked one lane of traffic for hours.
The road that was expected to be a strategic investment for the East-West connection is turning into an example of lack of responsibility and mismanagement of public funds.
Instead of facilitating movement and development of the area, the Qukë-Qafë Plloçë axis, whose construction took a full 14 years, is proving that 260 million euros does not guarantee a sustainable work, especially when transparency and quality are lacking in every phase of construction.
The new national road Qukës-Qafë Plloçë was inaugurated by Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister of Infrastructure, Belinda Balluku, on September 5 of this year.
