TAP delivers 50 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe, here are the countries

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which runs through Albania, has transported 50 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to Europe since the start of commercial operations. The significant achievement demonstrates TAP’s role in ensuring a reliable and diversified gas supply to Europe, while increasing competitiveness and contributing to decarbonization efforts across Southeastern Europe.

TAP, as the European segment of the Southern Gas Corridor, brings natural gas from Azerbaijan to European markets. Since the start of commercial operations in late 2020, TAP has delivered:
over 41.7 billion cubic meters to Italy
over 4.8 billion cubic meters to Greece
over 3.2 billion cubic meters to Bulgaria

Luca Schieppati, Managing Director of TAP, commented: “Reaching 50 bcm is more than a milestone – it is a clear demonstration of TAP’s strategic role in strengthening Europe’s energy security and supporting climate objectives. By delivering gas safely and reliably from a new source and a new route, TAP has helped diversify South East Europe’s energy mix and reduce its reliance on heavier fossil fuels, while also progressing along a decarbonisation path for our operations. Looking ahead, we are ready to further contribute to these objectives. In fact, the first level of TAP’s capacity expansion – set to add 1.2 bcm of long-term capacity per year from the start of 2026 – is already underway and will enable us to do even more. This could pave the way for further capacity expansions through Market Tests, depending on demand and the evolution of Europe's energy landscape.”

Marija Savova, TAP’s Commercial Director, added: “TAP has been delivering uninterrupted gas flows for more than four and a half years, delivering reliable services to our customers. Since the beginning of 2022, to address Europe’s growing demand for natural gas, TAP has been able to exploit the asset’s operating conditions and developed commercial products that have enabled us to transport volumes beyond the nominal capacity of the pipeline. This has strengthened Europe’s energy security and subsequently enhanced the roles of the host countries as regional energy hubs. As the 2023 Market Test draws to a close and the 2025 Market Test has just begun, we are ready to respond to market demand by enabling further capacity expansions.”

About the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)

TAP transports natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 877 km pipeline connects to the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) on the Turkey-Greece border at Kipoi, crosses Northern Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before reaching land in Southern Italy.

TAP facilitates the supply of gas to the countries of South-Eastern Europe through interconnectors. TAP is connected to the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), which began commercial operations in October 2022, bringing Caspian gas to Bulgaria, thus increasing the security of energy supplies to another European country. TAP’s exit points in Greece and Albania, together with the sea outlet in Italy, offer numerous opportunities for the onward transport of natural gas from Azerbaijan to wider European markets.

As a key part of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP is strategically and economically important for Europe and essential in ensuring reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays an important role in increasing Europe's energy security, diversifying supply, and achieving its decarbonisation objectives.

TAP's shares consist of bp (20%), SOCAR (20%), Snam (20%), Fluxys (20%), Enagás (20%).
