Free internet in 61 municipalities, Albania officially launches EU-funded

Albania officially launched the WiFi4WB initiative, which envisages the deployment of free public Wi-Fi hotspots in 61 municipalities across the country. This project is part of the program for digital transformation and bringing Albania closer to European Union standards.

The project launch ceremony was held at Kruja Castle, one of the most visited cultural destinations in the country.

WiFi4WB is part of the EU4Digital (EU for Digitalization) project, co-financed by the European Union and the German Government, and implemented by GIZ. The initiative envisages providing free public WiFi to around 500 municipalities in the Western Balkans and is part of a broader plan to accelerate the digital transition in the region, promoting the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union's Digital Single Market.

After the full implementation of the initiative, citizens and visitors will have free internet access in squares, parks, libraries, schools and cultural sites throughout the country.

“WiFi4AB is a simple idea with a powerful impact: free internet in 61 municipalities of Albania, creating access to digital services, information, learning and communication for all. This project is not just about internet connectivity. It aims to empower communities, support local development and bring the Western Balkans closer to the EU’s Digital Single Market,” said EU Ambassador Gonzato.
