Rama: Government will subsidize voluntary pensions, an obligation for businesses

Prime Minister Edi Rama declared that the government will subsidize additional contributions for state employees who want to have a voluntary pension. During a meeting in Durrës, Rama said that the government is preparing a new pension scheme, which includes a subsidy for voluntary pensions.

"We are preparing a new pension scheme. Giving people who want to save more for their pensions the opportunity to make a contribution, which the state will match with the same amount. So, if someone takes one euro out of their salary for their pension, the state will put in another euro. That way, it will be two euros," said Rama.

But the head of government said that the same scheme will also apply to those who work in the private sector, only in their case the government will force companies to subsidize the voluntary contribution.

"Of course this will be combined. The state for state employees, the private sector for its employees. And this will cause the pension fund to begin to take shape and guarantee both those who invest in the fund, but also guarantees the connection between the private sector and the employee in the long term because what we are seeing at this time, where technology is replacing humans, is the need for specialized human resources," the prime minister added.

Rama did not reveal how the government will force private companies to subsidize half of the voluntary contributions of employees who want to receive a higher pension, at a time when Albania is massively facing the phenomenon of companies that do not even pay mandatory pension contributions.

It also remains unclear whether these subsidies will be directed towards a special fund within the state scheme or will be available for private pensions as well.
